« on: 02 July 2006, 19:03 »
i have £120 to spend on some 13cms comps for my front door grills in my mk2, also where would be a good place to put the tweeters. i have a Vibe blackbox which will power them so amp is covered just need some good quality speakers.

firstly i hope you mean 13cms cos if not then ya know WOAH!! i dont use speakers that size, i went bigger, so ill let someone else recommend you some that they either use or have heard. Its good if u can actually get to these shops and actually hear them for yourself. Two places people put their tweeters are in the dash where the standard VAG stuff goes and removing the old speakers or ive also known people to mount thm in the mirror housing. Your best bet is to buy a set and then bluetac and move the tweeters around so u can decide the best place. I have mine in the dash and think they sound excellent there.

haha sorry yeah i meant CM! yeah im going to pop down to my local car audio shop soon but i just wanted some advice really on what to look for befour i went, and as for the Tweeter position that blue tac thing sounds good ill give it a try.

ive heard its a big pain in the ass to get them fitted into the housing of the wing mirror panel because there is no room but it is possible just need small enough tweeters, i was also thinking about where the window winders where because i have electric windows, but im bit worried my knee might block out the sound!!

i would personally recomend for that budget the MTX THS502 13cm components

they are very well priced at 89.99 RRP, and they have a very compact crossover and the tweeters are silk dome, so u get a very nice smooth sound, alot of manufacturers use aluminium tweeters in this budget range which i find to 'hissy' and harsh to listen too.

and ideally you should always mount the tweeters as close to the midrange as possible to prevent too much seperation of sound, so i would say to mount them in the upper dash is a complete NO NO!! if the door cards are not a good place then fit them in the kick wells, fire the tweeters upwards and u will be supprised with the results, the sound will be clear and appear to be coming from the front screen, have fitted alot of comps like this and works very well,

hope that helps

steve

cheers steve it helps alot nice one, i will post some pics once ive bought the speakers, what do you think about speakers in the parcel shelf i really dont want 6x9s is there an alternative or will the comps be enough up front? im getting a sub and amp off a mate i know its a JL sub and an Alpine amp but not to sure what model, i know the sub is worth £200 new so it must be pretty good so the bass is covered.

Hi Adam, I'm currently doing the same as you - amped 13cm comps up front and probably standard rear speakers running from the head unit to give a little rear fill if needed.

I initially had the same budget - but have ended up spending £80 on the comps, and £40 on sound deadening - as just about everyone I spoke to said that properly deadening speaker pods and front doors would be the FIRST thing to do.  The standard pods are pretty flimsy on their own.

I had intended to mount the tweeters in the standard dash locations, but opinions on this seems to be divided, so I'll probably experiment a little before deciding.  6x9s seem to be frowned upon and unecessary, especiallly if you'll be running a sub in the boot.

not a problem happy to help.

ive sent u a pm, regarding the comps,

but i wouldnt fit 6x9's the mtx comps amp'd will be more than enough and the sound stage should be at the front of the car, as has been suggested above sound proofing your front doors will be a very good option, and you dont have to spend fortunes, about £30 tops on a couple of rolls, 1 per door or if on a tight budget 1/2 roll per door, anything is better than nothing!

cheers
