Few additions.
« on: 13 February 2025, 14:29 »
Been racking up some miles in last few weeks and have enjoyed every minute of it. Car is immense and my drive to and from work now is a joy!!
Cleaner today (am frozen) few updates on the car
Had the mirrors and spoiler done and also added the clubspot detail on the door. (I know it's not on but we loved the look) Really chuffed with it. Next is alloys decided on the Queenstown from cmwheels but have to save a few more pennies for those.

Looking good! Out of interest are you thinking of the 18' Queenstowns from CM wheels?

Yes bud they are the ones.
Need to find out if my current tyres on my Richmond 18s
Will fit on the new Queenstown 18s ( as I said I have no idea about any of this so want to learn and be educated)
Ideally I don't want to buy new tyres and my current ones have only done 1k

I’m assuming the Richmonds are 7.5 wide. The Queenstowns are 8.0 so existing tyres which I assume are 225 section will fit but be slightly “stretched”. The pros and cons of this are for others to comment but if you want to avoid buying new tyres (at 235 section) you can use existings I think.

‘Ideal’ width tyres for an 8J wheel is either 225 or 235 section - see table below;

Durability of diamond cut alloys (which Queenstown’s are) can be patchy; it’s not unusual for VW OEM diamond cut alloys to succumb to white worm corrosion after a couple of years - sometimes sooner - if used on a daily driver all year round.

With this in mind, I’d personally avoid relatively cheap diamond cut replica alloys such as the Queenstown replicas, as durability of the diamond cut face may well be poorer than on VW OEM alloys. Diamond cut alloys also seem quite susceptible to damage by inexperienced or even overzealous tyre fitters. Having said that, if they do get damaged or succumb to white worm, then they’re cheap to replace; it would be cheaper to buy a new set of CM Wheels replica Queenstown alloys than it would be to get then refurbished to a good standard.

However, given the choice of alloys with a diamond cut or powder coat finish, I’d always go for the latter because of the superior durability of finish.

I’m very much taken with your across the road neighbour’s garden wall HBW. I love that stonework. Please tell them there’s some random guy off the internet that loves their wall…

As always, I’d have to agree with everything SRGTD says, and I can confirm from experience that a 225 tyre will sit perfectly well on an 8J wheel. This will also keep the Speedo reading perfect and with the ET45 offset the wheel will sit better in the arches. Win win.

When you mentioned wrapping the rear spoiler black recently I was expecting it to look nowhere near as good as it actually does. I’m actually quite impressed with how it looks.

The Clubsport side decals look good too. Being as it’s a custom look maybe you could add something to the rear doors too?
I’d have perhaps gone for an Edition 45 hexagon style graphic personally although I might have been tempted with mk1 GTI (and up! GTI) dual stripes.

What is the quality of the mirror caps like and are they a good fit?

And lastly - well done for braving the cold to clean the car!

Your brickwork is very nice too and I’m envious of your huge driveway.

Did they have no issues wrapping the mirror caps? They look quite a complex shape.
