Rattle inside dash - centre/drivers side
« on: 04 November 2024, 14:47 »
Hi all. I’ve got an annoying dashboard rattle on my 7.5 GTI - anyone had similar coming from the centre/drivers side? I’ve done a bit of reading up on mk7 rattles and It doesn’t appear to be the soundaktor as there’s no change switching between eco and sport. It’s not the surround around the rear view mirror or the sun visors either. I don’t believe it’s the drivers knee airbag either. I can make it stop when pressing on the section of dash which is a canopy above the dials or the centre of the vents above the hazard light button 😬 Any advice greatly appreciated as it’s been driving me crazy for a long time now!

I feel your pain

I tend to think all rattles are different but I had an annoying rattle like yours, pressing various parts would stop the rattle,  but I could never find it to actually prevent it. I thought it was the front centre vent under the windscreen but I was wrong. Noises seem to travel and bounce around especially off the windscreen (guess that's why the Soundaktor is where it is)

It drove me crazy, I had bits of dash off, the interior front quarter window trims, then the removable panel on the drivers side that you can see next to the door but actually part of the dash . It turned out to be the soft dash top next to the the window trim and tucked just under the dash, just below the surface.  This part was touching the metal crash structure that runs left to right and making a rattle etc.  Only had access fully from the footwell but a 5cm piece of neoprene cured it (pushed up and wedged in place).

Not saying its the same but these rattles can be buried deep.

BTW does it change if you drive around a roundabout? - right hand turning with the rattle sound then exit left hand the sound goes? It might help you to pin it down.

It’s painful isn’t it! My 21 year old Ford has significantly less rattles than Mk 5 year old Golf 🤣

Interesting to hear the cause of your rattle/squeak. I’ve never noticed if the sound changes/moves when going round a roundabout but I shall explore at the weekend and see what I notice. Interestingly it seems worse now it’s colder than summer. I’ve had the car since Sept 2023 and recall being annoyed last winter then the noise got less frequent over summer so the radio covered over the noise. Now it’s colder and happening more/louder it’s driving me mad!

The passenger side door card has started rattling infrequently now too so I’m wondering if that’s connected.

Thanks for the pointers - I shall investigate at the weekend and report back!
