Ironically, you spent about £2.5k fixing your A4, I'm looking at trying to buy an A4 Avant for £2.5k 

Get a Passat. They have a little more leg room than the A4's, meaning you can keep the little one in a rear facing seat longer and any rear seat passengers will have a bit of extra space, and you're not paying a premium for the badge. I was looking at A6's but the Passat's made more sense - same spec level or better and cost less. 

do not get a B6 passat if it's repair bills you're trying to avoid.. trust me
