Corrosive petrol?

Has anyone else looked at the rubbery part that fits around their fuel filler?

I notice light marks sitting just below the filler and thought it was just dirt - turns out that a small amount of some liquid, petrol I guess, has pooled and attacked the finish of the rubber and discoloured it.

This is my first petrol car for many many years so never seen anything similar with any of my diesel Golfs.

Cleaned it the best I could and have put a load of KC PSS on to protect it from any further damage.

Is the small drain hole in the lower left corner of that flexible rubbery part on your car blocked, which might account for liquid (petrol?) pooling there? Just done a quick internet search and it seems petrol can damage certain types of rubber.

I clean and dry the fuel filler compartment and the reverse side of the filler flap as part of my car washing routine. I also check the drain hole isn’t blocked, so there’s a good chance I would have noticed any deterioration. It looks the same as it did when I got my car 4 years ago.

No drain is fine and do the same as you with each wash - I guess all it took was for a very small amount to be sitting there between washes although I would have thought petrol would have evaporated fairly quickly.

I very rarely use E10 but 'maybe' that could have a worse effect than E5 if spilt?

As I said I've covered it in PSS which I think has some chemical resistance.

Some older cars cannot use E10 because some types of rubber fuel related hoses are corroded by it. Would not have thought this is the case but pooling may have exacerbated the discolouring if left?
