Service plan and oil changes
« on: 04 October 2014, 10:59 »
Hi guys,

My golf has just hit 15,000 miles (11 months old) and is now requesting a second oil change. The first time it did that I booked it in with the VW garage and had it done for free under the service plan, but since then it occurred to me that that probably used up what could have been a free 'full' service just on basically an oil change.

If I send it in again I'll have used 2 of the 3 free services in the first year, which doesn't seem right. I guess my options are:

1) Do the oil change myself (and not be able to reset the service counter).
2) Get VW to do it and accept that the service plan is going to run out much earlier than I thought
3) Get VW to do it but see if I can pay for the oil change and not use the service plan slot up on this

What do you guys think, and is there anything I've missed?

Thanks for any suggestions!

It asks you for the 2nd oil change at only 15k?

When did you do the first?
VW are not gonna say no to you paying anything, discuss options 2 and 3 with your dealer.

DIY is asking for trouble on warranty front - unless you are a qualified mechanic and can prove to VW that you carried the service out in accordance with their schedules...

The first one was at about 6,000 miles.

I've not got any mechanical experience beyond changing a wheel really - I can find instructions and I'd be able to get the job done, but I don't particularly want to, just don't want to squander a service.

Even on longlife the car shouldn't be asking for services at 6k miles then 15k miles. Did no-one at the dealership question why your car asked fir a service at 6k miles and (presumed) less than 5 months ownership? If you are on the service plan of up to 10k miles, or a year, whichever comes first. If the car asked fir the service then there was something wrong with it to do so. I think the dealership should be asking VW central to pay for an oil change service this time around. Had any major warranty work done for the oil quality sensors to demand a service early?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....
