GTI MK7 Manual Gear Trim
« on: 22 September 2024, 16:47 »
Hi 🙂👋

I'm new here, and I did do my 1st post to introduce myself in the 'New Arrivals' thread.

I have a query that I'm sure has more than likely been asked on here before; my question is, I'm trying to find a good source for the silver trim around the gear knob on a manual GTI MK7 RHD!

There seems to be a lot of LHD or automatic version, but not the one I have described 😔

I basically cut my hand on the trim a little while ago, which seems to be a common problem, and it's split the metal..

I did do a little search on here requarding this issue but didn't really see anything.

Edit: Just to add, I did go to an official VW garage and they only do the whole gear knob, not just the trim, and they quoted me £230.

Thanks for any help

Shaun

Hi Shaun,

Welcome!

Mine did the same, also happened to the steering wheel trim on my Clubsport.
For the knob I took it off and really carefully put a tiny amount of glue (NOT superglue, as it hazes shiny surfaces nearby) under the lifter part and taped it down, tight whilst it dried.
It's not perfect but way better and not sharp anymore.
Only real solution I guess is new knob. I just ordered one from Kunzman in Germany.

might be cheaper than VW?

For the steering wheel I got a really good second hand trim from ebay.

Anyway good luck!

Jason.

Hi mate, thanks for the info 🙂👍🏻

Unfortunately, I did use superglue and it didn't go well. I also did it with the trim in place, instead of taking it completely off and doing it 😭

I've looked everywhere on the net with no joy on a RHD, and the last website I came across was actually that Kunzmann site you linked, but they don't do RHD versions..

I might have to bite the bullet on a genuine knob 🫤

Thanks
Shaun

It may be worth chancing your arm with VW over this even out of warranty. The gear shift trim was subject to a recall in the US and Canada for this very reason, even if they don't replace it FOC they may contribute toward the cost.

I've already asked them about the recall on this and they said they had no recognition of a recall in the UK for it, and they wouldn't be able to fix it. Seems very wrong if you ask me because it's really quite an easy thing to get your hand cought on which can cause quite a cut..

It's just the knob on mine that has gone bad, the surround at the base is fine so I'm going to swap them over.

If you view large, you can see the black line on the silver trim on the back of the knob, this is where mine went.
I'm planning on undoing the staples on the LHD one and swapping over the knob and boot to my original RHD frame.

Tip to anyone removing the gear knob - Be REALLY careful removing them so as not to break the clips\tabs.

Will let you know how it works out.

Oh maybe ebay or a scrapyard might be worth checking out to see if you can find a good RHD replacement?

Ah, I see 👍🏻

Thanks for the advise mate!

I did think about going round to scrap yards. Feels like a longwinded thing to do but it might be my only chance to get one on the cheap.

It does baffle me a bit as to why the RHD versions aren't so accessible as the LHD's 🤔

I had exactly the same problem.  Looks tatty, and very sharp.
I gave up looking and fixed mine myself.
The trim comes off very easy, without the need to remove the knob itself.
So peeled the ugly veneer off, sanded it all down, sprayed it silver, then a clear top coat.  Turned out very well I thought, with a good match to the trim it meets on the little storage cubby in front of the gear lever.
Well worth a try.
