Quick review of Gnashers new GTI PP
« on: 27 April 2014, 07:14 »
Well, went to collect the car from Limassol port last Thursday (3 hour round trip plus over an hour there) for the Cypriot customs computer system to crash just before they printed the last form meaning a wasted trip and a "Can you come back tomorrow?" Ent back down on Friday and the guy had already finished my paperwork prior to me getting there. All credit to them, it wasn't their fault, they were very apologetic and they sorted it before I got there on the Friday. So on to the car (a combination of driving in the UK and Cyprus)

The good bits...

Only really done 400 miles but so far, no noisy suspension issues. The suspension does seem firmer than my Astra VXR was which had Eibach sportlines fitted, but it's not crashy or noisy.
The quality of the interior is spot on, seats (leather) are comfy and everthing works as it should. Not tried the seat heaters yet as it's peaking at 30 degrees out here!
RVC and park assist works well. I tried it the other day on a massively tight spot that I wouldn't have attempted myself and it works a treat. Also, having park assist (even if you never use it) gives you 360 degree coverage on the parking sensors. Not sure whether non park assist has this?
I'm also glad you can setthe digital speedo to km/h, makes it a lot easier driving out here than looking at the mass of numbers on the analogue speedo.
Loving the dynaudio (and that's coming from a £1000+ setup in my Astra) and the standard infotainment system. Lots of things still to setup and adjust though.
It's also more economical and cheaper to tax (although not insure, my premium doubled from an Astra VXR!)

The bad bits (and I had to be picky here)...

Not really a fault, but the brakes take a bit of getting used to. First time I applied them (when I picked it up from the dealer) I nearly went through the winscreen. Mrs Gnasher did exactly the same lol!
The wheels - mainly the stupid channel that is directly behind the spokes. An absolute pig to clean and it invariably holds a pool of dirty water when you wash it that flicks up the sides of the car when you drive off. I was never a big fan of the wheels (looks wise) so it's just another nail in their coffin - they're going!
It's also a lot bigger than my last car. I'm not the tallest bloke in the world and only just manage to reach the centre of the roof lol!

All in all, very happy with it so far. No problems to report and hopefully many years of happy motoring ahead!!

I detest that wheel Groove too on my 19s, what a ridiculous thing.

Good to hear it arrived safe and sound and I'd think the white paint will be useful in 30+ heat!

I'm only 5'7 myself so the fact the car is a few mm lower than a mk6 makes a huge difference to car cleaning for me too! How do people manage to clean Tiguans?!!!

And yes, that groove - Grrrrrr!
I kept the 19" BBS from my last two GTI's and although I don't think they look as good on the mk7 as they did on the mk6 they don't have that hugely irritating groove which makes the Austins an absolute pig to clean.
Like you, I'm not sold on the styling of the Austins very much either but was prepared to 'live with them' if they'd have been much easier to clean. Alas not, I had exactly the same issues as you with dirt getting trapped in the groove and after two washes they came off.
I guess the idea of the groove is to make the wheel stronger?

And the Santi's have the same issue then? Do the GTD 18's have the groove too?

I'm just over 6ft tall and needed a caravan step to clean the tiguan roof. Was a right pain in the ar4e but having the golf is great for roof cleaning.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.
