Golf mk 3 GTI ADY will not start
« on: 15 January 2012, 17:50 »
Hi Guys
I'm after a bit of advice.
I have had my mk 3 for a couple of years and seems to run really well.
Today i go out for a short trip, after about 3 miles join the dual carriageway and the car pulls and seems to loose all power. So i pull over and it dies on the side of the road.
I try re-starting, the engine turns over but will not fire. It has a new battery and fuel.
I do the man thing where i open up the bonnet and look inside for inspiration, wiggle a few wires and unplug the ht leads from the dizzy and the spark plugs. Push them all back on firmly.
Re-start the car and it all fires back up, so i carry on my way for 5 miles.

Anyhow, when i go to start the car after an hours shopping, it just turns over again but does not start.

I ring the AA and the guy comes out, does lots of test with multimeters etc. and says it's either the coil pack or the hall chip inside the dizzy, the latter costing about £150-200.

Any ideas as the car is only worth about £500, so i want to get it right without spending a fortune on different bits.

cheers

if you're half decent with spanners then its not that expensive to fix both.
Coil is about £60, maybe cheaper on the bay of fleas and only 10 mins to swap over.
My guess is coil on your symptoms.
You can get a working dizzy for about the same, should be a guide on here somewhere as its been covered over more times than the Greek economy

Thanks, looks like the likely cause.
Is it main stealer only? I noticed eurocarparts do them for an ADY, any good?
Cheers

ECP ones are ok, should last a couple of years
